How do I make a wax seal with a glue gun?

  1. Prepare your work space and gather all the gear you're going to need: wax sticks, your wax seal stamp, glue gun and the material/s you’re adding wax seals to. The wax is sticky, so protect your workspace and yourself [wax can burn, and it’s extremely difficult to get out of clothing!]
  2. Plug in your glue gun, and allow it to heat up for around 5-10 minutes before you put in any wax. Avoid touching the nozzle when it's hot! Rest your glue gun on a study surface with the nozzle pointed down - and make sure your surface is protected from stray drops of hot wax.
  3. When the glue gun is warmed up, insert your stick of sealing wax and pull the trigger slowly until you feel pressure. When you're ready, pull the trigger again and the melted wax will come out of the nozzle, onto your chosen surface. One or two squirts should be enough to make a circle around 15mm diameter.
  4. Then, while the wax is hot, press your stamp gently into the centre of your circle of wax. Let the stamp rest on the wax while it sets [around 30 seconds].
  5. Once the wax hardens, gently lift the stamp off the wax. You might need to give it a little wiggle. Et voilà! Your first wax seal!

TIPS

  • If you're making wax seals in bulk, the brass will start to heat up, making it harder to lift it off the wax. In this case, cool it down with some ice or a little bit of cold water (make sure the stamp is dry before you use it again, and avoid getting the wooden handle wet).
  • Once the wax gets too short for the trigger, add your next stick of wax to push it through.
  • The glue gun can overheat - in this case, unplug it and let the gun cool down.
